Why the Phone Ban is Beneficial For Students

On June 30, 2025 Gov. Mike DeWine signed Ohio House Bill 250 which prohibits the use of cell phones in public
schools which has left many students and some teachers alike divided on the decision. Cell phones offer
impressive capabilities, helping improve productivity and allowing students to contact their friends and family, especially in case of emergency. With these capabilities comes problems however, as many students are addicted
to their cell phones, cheating in classes and causing lots of drama that can spiral even outside of the school
grounds. Governor DeWine’s decision doesn't come from nowhere however, stating, “The constant distraction of cell phones makes it nearly impossible for students to focus and learn. Not only do they negatively impact student performance, but they can also be harmful to kids’ mental and emotional health” when signing the bill. DeWine also states that schools with a phone ban already in effect have had remarkable improvement with student engagement,
grades and socialization improving. With school now being in session for a little under a month now the student body has adapted to a phone-less school year with very little cell phone issues. As of the 6th, there have only been 67 reported incidents with phones, which is surprisingly low considering the amount of phone usage just a year before. This break from their phones has been good so far with improved focus and socialization, and I am for it. I am
aware of the common complaints of the phone ban being communication with parents or guardians but there is already a solution to this problem! The main office and nurses office allows students to call and talk to their parents in the case of an emergency. While the phone ban is not perfect, it is an excellent step forward to getting school back to being a house of education, without all of the distractions.
